The Fine Brothers 'react' to backlash by discontinuing newly announced program

LOS ANGELES -- Everything is not fine with The Fine Brothers.

In response to growing backlash, the YouTube duo said Monday night that they have discontinued their "React World program."

The duo first came under fire last week after announcing they were going to license their highly popular "react" videos to creators worldwide. Many YouTube creators argued the brand is not The Fine Brothers' to license, calling it an attempt to claim profits over every "reaction" video out there.

"We’re here to apologize," Benny and Rafi Fine said in a Medium post on Monday. "We realize we built a system that could easily be used for wrong. We are fixing that. The reality that trademarks like these could be used to theoretically give companies (including ours) the power to police and control online video is a valid concern, and though we can assert our intentions are pure, there’s no way to prove them."

In addition to discontinuing the program, the Fine Brothers said they will "rescind all of our 'React' trademarks and applications" and "release all past Content ID claims."

The Fine Brothers REACT channel has about 5.7 million followers. Their now defunct initiative promised creators worldwide access to 11 of Fine Bros. Entertainment shows and trademarks including "Kids React," "Teens React," "Elders React," "Adults React," "React Gaming" and more.

Debate over the news first began on Thursday after one creator posted his frustration on Reddit.

Up until Monday, the Fine Brothers' efforts to clean up any confusion had failed. The brand suffered, with many unsubscribing to the Fine Bros. channels.

The duo posted an update on YouTube on Sunday, admitting they "completely screwed up" with how they "originally talked about this."

But YouTube creators were still not pleased. One user even made parody video mocking the apology, which has been viewed almost 1 million times.

The Fine Brothers video has since been taken down.

By Monday morning, the top six posts on Reddit's videos subreddit thread were still about the Fine Brothers.

Calling it a "hard week," the Fine Brothers on Monday acknowledged the "concerns people have about React World are understandable, and that people see a link between that and our past video takedowns, but those were mistakes from an earlier time. It makes perfect sense for people to distrust our motives here, but we are confident that our actions will speak louder than these words moving forward."
