'The Daily Show' found an old Trump speech encouraging people to climb concrete walls

'Get to the other side of that wall.'

President Donald Trump is a master at giving mixed signals.

As nearly everyone in America knows — because the government's been shut down for 19 days now — Trump is dead set on building a wall across the souther border in hopes it will help keep undocumented immigrants from entering the country. But back in 2004, he was preaching a very different message.

In a video clip discovered by The Daily Show, Trump is seen encouraging soon-to-be graduates at Staten Island's Wagner College to never let a concrete wall get in their way.

After addressing his stardom and "financial comeback," Trump decided to share some advice with the students. He told them to be sure to do what they love in the future, and also, "never, ever give up."

"Don’t give up. Don’t allow it to happen. If there’s a concrete wall in front of you, go through it. Go over it. Go around it. But get to the other side of that wall," he continued.

Interesting. Especially since it sounds like Trump was confidently admitting walls don't work, despite spending the entirety of his campaign and presidency swearing they do.

Trevor Noah aired the old footage on Wednesday night, after reports that Trump walked out of a meeting with Democrats after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to fund the expensive border wall.

"If there’s one thing we know, it’s that nothing will stop immigrants from trying to come to America," Noah said.

"This is a place that people dream of coming to, because people trying to make a better, safer life for their families will do anything to achieve that dream. And I know Donald Trump understands this — because of this video we found from 15 years ago."

Perhaps Trump should take a trip down memory lane and reflect on his own 2004 advice before arguing to drop billions on a wall like the one he once encouraged people to do everything in their power to overcome.
