There's a new rumor about the next-generation Apple Watch models that may excite users who have been crossing their fingers for more sleep health tools.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, a reliable leaker and Apple analyst, the Cupertino-based tech giant may unveil a sleep apnea monitor at the Sept. 9 "Glowtime" event.

Apple Watch rumor: New sleep apnea sensor

Mashable has been tracking Apple Watch rumors for quite some time now, and initially, according to several Bloomberg reports, Apple was reportedly considering three health-focused sensors for the wearable:

However, it looks like only one of those three health features has made the cut for the 2024 models. As mentioned at the outset, the next-gen Apple Watch models are reportedly gaining a new sleep apnea sensor. For the uninitiated, sleep apnea is a common condition in which an individual's breathing "repeatedly stops and starts" many times during sleep, according to Mayo Clinic.

The sleep apnea sensor will reportedly build upon the current sleep-tracking offerings on the Apple Watch.

According to Gurman, the new health tool will have the ability to analyze whether a user is suffering from sleep apnea — and then prompt the wearer to seek further testing with a medical professional.

The sleep apnea sensor is expected to roll out to the Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. However, according to Gurman, it will not be available day one.

There are whispers that Apple may also be unveiling the next-generation Apple Watch SE at the Glowtime event, but there's a good chance that it will not feature the reported new sleep apnea sensor.
