There are many mysteries at the Olympic complex in Rio de Janeiro. One is the algae-filled pool that went from blue to a deep, sea green.

But nothing is as puzzling as Ryan Lochte's green hair.

The 12-time Olympic medalist showed off his new silver locks just a week ago on his Instagram page.

"New look here we go Rio," he captioned.

But the blond locks didn't last. In just under a week, Lochte's hair went from platinum to ... green, although the 32-year old swimmer insists that it's "light blue."

We're unsure as to whether this was a premeditated move, or if the off-tint pool was the reason for the hair transformation. (The discoloration began in one of the diving pools, but other sections of the natatorium have now been affected.) In either case, it's left us feeling very confused.

And we're not alone. Lochte's own mother, Ileana, told Good Morning America she was a little taken aback as well.

“He always does something," she told them. “I’ve gotten used to everything that he possibly could do and so this is an okay thing.”

Besides, she said, "it’s better than the grills."

We could not agree more.
