TL;DR: Snag the original PetSafe Smart Feed automatic dog and cat feeder from Amazon for just $159.95. It's normally $189.85, so you'll save $30.

It's not that you don't want to be home at a decent hour to feed your pet; it's just that the bar down the street from your office has $5 glasses of wine 'til 8 and your coworker promised to give you the lowdown on that cute newbie in IT.

Whatever your reason for being MIA while your dog or cat is home alone — work, traffic, happy hour — you can make sure they still get dinner by picking up an automatic pet feeder. (That's right — no need to make a frantic last-minute call to your neighbor or pet sitter.) The brand PetSafe makes one called the Smart Feed that's equipped with WiFi so you can feed your pet from anywhere, and Amazon is currently offering its first-generation model on sale for $30 off its suggested retail price. (The second-generation Smart Feed with Alexa integration came out just a few days ago; it's also on sale on Amazon, albeit at a less impressive discount.)

The Smart Feed is a pet-proof dispenser featuring a removable stainless steel bowl and a receptacle that can hold up to 24 cups of dry or semi-moist food. Simply place it in your dog's normal eating spot, then download the free PetSafe app on your smartphone and connect the dispenser to your WiFi. You can then set up a profile and schedule your pet's meal times and portions; there's even a Slow Feed setting that doles out small amounts of food every 15 minutes, which is perfect for pets who tend to scarf down their kibble too quickly. Once you fill the Smart Feed with food and plug it in, you're good to go — and the app will send you a notification every time a meal is dispensed.

Amazon customer Nansea33 bought a Smart Feed for her cats and gave it a 5/5-star review, writing:

"When the hubby is up at 4:30 am, so are the kitties, we have 2 of them! Momma isn't up that early, but kitties don't care... they want to eat. In comes this auto feeder! I set it up in no time and programmed it to feed them at 5 am. It took a little adjusting for the kitties to trust it as it's a little noisy when dispensing the foot in the metal bowl... but they're used to it now and once they hear the motor kick in (not loud at all) to move the food, zooooom... they're right there at the bowl."

Get the original Smart Feed here for just $159.95. (Want the newest model instead? Get it here for $189.95 — $10.04 off its MSRP of $199.99.)
