When it comes to Google Android OS and Apple iOS, you’re likely one or the other. It's a kind of tech tribalism. In this Bluetooth-synced, device-powered world, being either Android or Apple is more than a preference: It’s a lifestyle choice, a state of mind.

If you prefer Google's Android OS to Apple's iOS, it stands to reason that you'd prefer an Android-powered tablet. And iPads can cost big bucks. It's little wonder that people are switching to Android.

But this tech-based world can be a complicated business. If you’re still unsure about which operating system to choose, or need some guidance selecting a tablet, here’s a quick guide to all things Android.

What is Android?

Android is a Google-owned mobile operating system. The chances of you being an Android user are high. It’s the most popular operating system in the world. Unlike Microsoft and Apple OS, it’s open source, meaning other companies can use it without permission — which is why Android is so widely used. Other operating systems also support Android applications, such as Chrome OS and Windows 11.

Which devices use Android?

You can find the Android OS on most kinds of everyday devices — laptops, smartphones, and tablets. You can also find Android on smartwatches that use Wear OS (which is an Android system) and smart TVs that use Android TV.

What is the Google Play Store?

This is the Android equivalent of Apple’s App Store. You can find tons of Google-approved apps there. Not all Android apps are made by Google though, and the Google Play Store is not the only place to get apps for Android. To support Google apps, your device will need Google Play Services. This is a piece of software that connects your apps, Google services, and Android. Some devices use Android but are distinctly non-Google, such as Amazon’s Android devices.

Is Android OS better than Apple iOS?

Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Chances are you’re already an Android diehard if you’re reading this — or perhaps an Apple iOS user looking to make the transition. The truth is, the two systems are not as different as they used to be. The major difference is how tightly controlled Apple’s apps and App Store are.

There are certainly benefits to Android. Because so many manufacturers make devices on the Android OS, you can get devices — including tablets — at a wide range of prices. It’s much harder to shop budget with Apple than it is with Android.

Other benefits include Android’s more customisable experience. An Apple device looks like an Apple device no matter whom it belongs to, while you can generally gear your Android device towards your own style and user experience. Also, the universal USB-C charger you get with Android is a massive bonus. How annoying is it for Apple users when there’s not a lightning charger in sight?

What is the best Android tablet?

We have lined up an impressive bunch of Android tablets that should suit a wide range of budgets. Built on the Google operating system, all of these tablets look great, run efficiently, and can handle multiple tasks.

These are the best Android tablets in 2025.

The Good & The Bad

  • Powerful AI feature
  • Vibrant AMOLED display
  • Vision Booster tech
  • S Pen included
  • Serious processing power
  • Syncs with Samsung devices
  • No headphone jack
  • A bit weighty

Why We Like It

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ is the latest version of Samsung's flagship tablet series. As with previous gen models, it's the biggest contender to the iPad as the overall best tablet. It's big, incredible to look at, and comes packed with a suite of AI features that make it a true next gen upgrade. Need a tablet for creative tasks? It's great for that too and comes equipped with an S pen

The AI features are the big selling point — an upgrade in the user experience. These features include smart note taking, which can record a meeting and transcribe the notes, plus Circle to Search, which allows you to circle anything on your tab and Google search it. There's also Sketch to Image, which turns your sketches into AI art. It's fun if not surplus to requirements.

The real downside is the price, which is always the case with this range. They're great but expensive. If price isn't an issue and you want something even bigger, there's also the 14.6-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra.

The Good & The Bad

  • OnePlus Canvas multitasking
  • Laptop quality 2K display
  • Punchy speakers
  • Processing power
  • Weird rear camera
  • Stylus sold separately

Why We Like It

OnePlus continues the industry-bucking trend of superb tablets at a very reasonable price. Indeed, the OnePlus Pad 2 is a fantastic update and a contender for the best Android tablet if you want value for money.

This tablet does all the basics brilliantly — it's great for reading and streaming and general web use, and has a decent wallop of processing power thanks to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 CPU. And there's a seriously generous battery life.

It has a feature called OnePlus Canvas, which is a fancy naming for keeping up to three apps open at once, allowing you to multitask and drag and drop files between them. If you have a OnePlus phone you can also transfer documents between the devices with One-Touch Transmission.

The rear 13MP camera is placed centrally, which feels a bit counter intuitive after years of phone and tablet rear cameras being placed in a top corner. But other than that, there's not much to complain about.

The Good & The Bad

  • Huge eye-popping display
  • Powerful enough for gaming
  • Magnetic S Pen included
  • AI features and Circle to Search
  • Might be too heavy
  • Big size, big price

Why We Like It

If you want to go big and premium, look no further than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra. It's a whopper of a tablet, and while there's a new version available — the S10, which we've noted above — you'll save £300 with this model and the differences are marginal. Not that it's cheap, of course.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra packs in plenty of oversized spec: A 14.6-inch super AMOLED screen, 256GB of storage (with even bigger models available), 4K video recording, powerful quad speakers, and both rear (13MP) and front-facing (12MP) cameras. There's also Samsung's now-standard suite of AI features, including Circle to Search and automatic note taking.

As with other Galaxy Tabs, it comes equipped with an S pen for design tasks. Creativity is where this tablet really excels, in fact, due to its big hi-res display and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered processing. Digital artists will appreciate the super low latency and seamless fluidity. Though bear in mind that it may be too big if you need a tablet for regular commuting or on-the-go usage.

Details

The Good & The Bad

  • Family-friendly features
  • Stylus included
  • Mini cinematic experience
  • Kid-conscious durability
  • Lower spec than other models

Why We Like It

The Lenovo Tab M11 is a very respectable option at a budget price point. It's designed to be a mini entertainment system, with a cinematic mode, Dolby Atmos quad-speakers, and HD visuals. A 10-hour battery gives you enough power for binge watching, too.

It's also made specifically for families. The Google Kids app has all kinds of features both both learning and play, while parents can rest assured that the kids are in safe hands thanks to robust parental controls. It will even recommend content and maintain safe-searching online.

There's a stylus include for note-taking and doodling. And if you need to stay on top of your admin it has a smart scanner features that can convert documents into pdf files.

There are bigger spec tablets out there, of course. That's to be expected when you're shopping at this price point. But if you need something affordable to keep the whole entertained, you can't really go wrong. Particularly if you want to snuggle up on the sofa and stream with the kids.

The Good & The Bad

  • LCD display with Vision Booster
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Competitive battery life
  • Snapdragon CPU
  • More advanced Tabs available

Why We Like It

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE is an attractive tablet that combines elements of the S9 and S9+ but pares down the overall spec for a mid-range price point (FE stands for Fan Edition). In truth, you’d need to be pretty picky to not appreciate this as a solid all-rounder for under £450.

It's not the newest or most advanced Galaxy Tab model, buy the overall package is still very attractive, with its gorgeous 10.9-inch LCD display, S-Pen for creative tasks and note taking, and a high-performance battery that means literally hours upon hours of video watching.

Whereas previous gen FE models have lacked in processing power, this version is built with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It's particularly good for note-taking — it has an S pen included and a built-in note taking app — and it's the first Samsung FE tab with water and dust resistance, which means you can take it pretty much anywhere for on-the-go streaming/creativity.

The Good & The Bad

  • Alexa-enabled
  • Upgraded performance
  • Subscriptions required
  • Plasticky feel

Why We Like It

You might not think of Amazon's Fire range as Android devices, but they run on Fire OS, which is a specially designed offshoot of Android that's specific to these tablets. And the Amazon Fire 10 is the latest version of Amazon's 10-inch model.

Made with Alexa built-in, this tablet suits homes that already use Alexa — or anyone who's looking to use the voice assistant technology for the first time — as it can sync with and control other Alexa devices. And there are plenty of apps through the Amazon Appstore (though you can install Google Play Store if you prefer).

It has a Full HD display, which makes this great for casual streaming and it's obviously made to keep you entertained through Amazon Prime and the Kindle e-book app. Perhaps best of all is the price. It's an excellent model for under £150 and you'll find that Amazon often discounts it below the standard RRP.

Nokia T20 tablet

Nokia T20

Best For Tight Budgets

The Good & The Bad

  • No-frills fun
  • Great for kids
  • Excellent battery life
  • Entertainment options
  • Lacks advanced features

Why We Like It

You might not think of Nokia as a go-to brand for tablets. Indeed, we mostly associate the Nokia name with gloriously retro mobile phones. But if you want an affordable tablet for watching Netflix, responding to emails, and general web browsing, the Nokia T20 is a stellar option.

It’s powered by the family-friendly Android 11. Kids Space keeps your little ones both entertained and safe online, while Entertainment Space puts all your streaming and entertainment apps in one easy-to-access location.

Its cameras are a bit lacklustre but it’s a hard-wearing piece of kit that will go the distance with regular, robust use. Sure, this can’t match the performance or complexities of a high-end Samsung Galaxy or the iPad, but at this price it’s unlikely that you’re looking for that calibre anyway.
