Around 1912, cattle ranchers in Maui destroyed what were probably the last surviving Maui hau kuahiwi plants. Now Resurrecting the Sublime, a collective effort between artists and scientists, has brought the plant’s unique aroma back to life.

Working with DNA from a preserved herbarium, researchers were able to extract some of the plant’s scent enzymes. Combining those smells with the odours of Maui hau kuahiwi ’s natural habitat, the project offers an immersive sensory experience.
