Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have already tackled high fantasy — now, with Netflix's upcoming 3 Body Problem, they turn their sights to the realm of science fiction.

Inspired by the book trilogy by Hugo award-winning novelist Liu Cixin, 3 Body Problem tells a story of alien invasion that spans decades. We begin in 1960s China, where a young woman's game-changing discovery will have major consequences reverberating to the present. Now, a group of brilliant scientists must unite to face a great alien threat, with many unexpected twists and turns along the way.

The trailer for 3 Body Problem keeps the show's plot details under wraps, but we do get some pretty stunning shots of alien planets, an army being sucked into the sky, and some foreboding satellite dishes. Who knows, we may be looking at our next sci-fi obsession.

3 Body Problem hits Netflix Jan. 2024.
